Lake Massapoag gave us great conditions for sailing last Saturday - medium winds, temps in the low 80s, and sunny skies - just as predicted (for once). Nine Laser sailors (although not all at the same time) took advantage of the great weather. There was a wide age range with two generations well represented. Two women participated. PRO Jim Cavanaugh ran eight races before our usual finish time of 5 PM, and then offered to run an encore which, of course, we all accepted.
We sailed some unusual courses. Sharon HS sailing coach Gary Werden had set three windward marks and two leeward marks so we could change the course for each race to adjust for the shifting wind. - By the way, we all really appreciate Gary setting out his personally owned marks, and retrieving them after the racing each Thursday night and Saturday afternoon, using his own motorboat week after week. - Anyway, getting back to the courses, the winner of each race selected the next course. With so many marks there were a lot of possibilities. Roger Sharp chose an "hourglass course" which consists of a windward leg to the left most windward mark, then around the other two windward marks leaving them all to starboard, then downwind with the requirement of passing through the start-finish line to a leeward gate rounding either of the two marks. Finally there was an upwind leg to the finish. It all seemed to make sense at the time, and was definitely a lot of fun. We'll be back on the water tomorrow night at 6:30 PM.
Coming up this Saturday, we will have a special treat. Coach Gary will be doing some videography of the Laser and Sunfish sailing. Followed the sailing, he will be hosting a party at his waterfront home at the north end of the lake during which we'll be able to view the video recordings. I guess you can sail there or drive there. I think it will be very instructional for all of us, and will definitely be great fun. Don't miss out on this great opportunity!
