Twelve boats including four Sunfish came out last night for a beautiful sunset, but only light winds that turned into a drifter. It's not unusual for the wind to die as the sun sets at Lake Massapoag. Why does this happen? I'm told that daytime uneven heating of land surfaces causes updrafts and downdrafts. The resulting turbulence has a tendency to bring higher speed high altitude winds down to the surface where we sailors need them. With the setting sun the whole atmosphere settles down, and the higher speed winds stay aloft. Whatever the scientific explanation, we Massapoag sailors are very familiar with the end result. We were able to get two or three races in for each fleet, but it was a long, slow sail back to shore.
Looking forward, don't forget about our special event for Lasers and Sunfish tomorrow which begins at 3 PM, well before sunset. The regular informal racing will be preceded by some special drills with videography by Sharon HS sailing coach Gary Werden for anyone who wishes to participate. After the sailing finishes at 5 PM, proceed by land or by sea to Gary's waterfront home at the north end of the lake for a cookout and to watch the video. Come on down, even if it's your first time joining us this season. The forecast is looking very good. Don't miss out on the fun and this unique opportunity!
