I have a fairly simple request.
Back in the day, we used to take a certain amount of pride in how the club looked in the winter after we had packed everything away and abandoned the place for six months. There was never much that could be done about the beach with stacked docks and barrels covering much of it, but the view from the street was something we could control and something we did worry about. The theory was that it was our responsibility as a good neighbor to leave the property looking as natural and undisturbed as possible. This aesthetic concern was a major factor in having a rule against winter storage of boats that were not placed on racks.
Over time, winter storage has become an accepted practice. It seems highly unlikely that we will ever revisit that decision, but we don’t have to completely throw out our good neighbor responsibilities and our sense of aesthetics. We can at least do our best to minimize the eyesore of carelessly stored boats, and surely we can do better than last year when the club looked like a low rent marina.
I suggest that no boats be stored in the inner circle of the driveway and that the view from the entrance to the clubhouse be unobstructed by boats of any kind (large, small, and rowing dinghies). There seems to be plenty of room in the southwest corner of the property – from the right of the bathrooms over to and a little past the hoist. Large boats stored there would be out of the line of sight and would be less of a problem for the spring work party. Lasers and Sunfish could be put on the empty spaces on the racks on the beach and to the right of the clubhouse. The old dinghies could be put on racks, the beach, or in a dumpster.
Maybe there is already a plan afoot that will improve how things look. If so, bravo! If not, could we make one? Currently there are five big boats, five small boats, and a pile of dinghies in the inner circle. With minimal effort, they could all be moved, and the club could look 100 % better.

Looks definitely count and we should all take a look tomorrow as we drive in for the work party. You will clearly understand what Gary described and a great suggestion he made. I took a look today and totally agree. Putting the boats in a better location for the winter is not only easy, but responsible. I heard another member stating in the beginning of the year how embarrassed he was at the condition of the club grounds when he brought a friend by. He turned right around and left. We don't need to wait for the next business meeting to make this happen and don't wait for the election of the next Rear Commodore. Let's take advantage of the work party TOMORROW to make this happen. The leaves are expected and we can put off raking the leaves until spring time. Move the boats instead.
ReplyDeleteSince this did nto happen at the work party, perhaps the people who are bothered by this an go to the Club and move some boats. i personally am not offended by the boats being where they are, but would be willing to help move them if someone asked me.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to be personally bothered. You need to think of others who drive past our club. It could be so much better if the wintering boats could be moved to the south side of the property and put neatly away for the winter. This is a responsibility of those who leave the boats over the winter. Nobody else. I call on the Board's support to help keep MYC responsible to the neighborhood year round. Not to move boats, but call on those who leave their boats over the winter to take more responsibility for their surroundings.
